JOB DETAILS:

Army troops, equipment and supplies can't transport themselves. Together, the United States Armed Forces own and operate thousands of heavy trucks, buses, helicopters, airplanes and ships. Transportation Management Coordinators organize, plan and oversee the movement of those vehicles, personnel and cargo worldwide.

Transportation Management Coordinators are primarily responsible for scheduling and selecting the modes of transportation for personnel and equipment. Some of your duties as a Transportation Management Coordinator may include:

-Advise military and DoD civilians of their entitlements for shipment of personal property and passenger travel and prepare the necessary documentation
-Request and coordinate transportation to meet a movement mission
-Mark, label cargo and freight shipments in accordance with regulatory requirements
-Document and inventory freight, cargo and materiel shipments of all types; operating automated data terminal equipment to preparing movement documentation or related correspondence
-Arrange documentation and reports for follow-up or response to tracer actions
-Prepare transportation movements documents and related forms for the type of shipment and mode of travel
-Perform system administrator duties such as installing software and uploading data to computer systems
-Prepare equipment, cargo, and personnel for travel to airports, seaports, and railways
-Prepare and process documentation for loss, damage control and retrograde shipments

Job training for a Transportation Management Coordinator requires 10 weeks of Basic Training, where you'll learn basic Soldiering skills, and six weeks of Advanced Individual Training. Part of this time is spent in the classroom and part in the field. Some of the skills you'll learn are:

Determining most efficient modes of transportation
Marking and label cargo
Preparing transportation documents
Processing data within the transportation network using automated equipment
Preparing equipment for movement
 
Helpful skills:
-An interest in working with computers
-An interest or experience in coordinating transportation
-An interest in planning events
-An interest in motor vehicles, aircrafts and ocean liner vessels
-An interest in working with people
 
Advanced level Transportation Management Coordinators provides guidance, supervises and trains other Soldiers within the same discipline. As an advanced level Transportation Management Coordinator, you may be involved in:

-Research, interpret, prepare and coordinate actions pertaining to travel entitlements
-Function as the customs officer for shipment releases in overseas theaters
-Operate as quality control NCO for commercial movement contracts
-Monitor all freight, cargo and materiel shipments to ensure accountability; identifying and reporting problem areas within the transportation system to prevent additional costs, losses and damage
-Conduct briefings for unit moves
-Request, coordinate and monitor movement schedules and programs; ensuring transport capability is appropriate, cost effective and meets mission requirements
-Check and inspect equipment blocking and bracing
-Prepare and consolidate transportation movement reports
-Operate automated data processing equipment to document movement information; conduct research, monitor movements, inspect commercial contracts and respond to shipment inquiries, discrepancies and routine movements transactions
-Coordinate with different logistical agencies both military and civilian
-Prepare country clearance for equipment, cargo, and personnel with US Embassies
