Biomedical Equipment Specialist


Electronic instruments are used in all areas of the Army, especially within the Army's health care team. The Biomedical Equipment Specialist is primarily responsible for servicing and maintaining all medical equipment. The equipment you'll be working with will possibly involve mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electronic, digital, optical and radiological principals.

Some of your duties as a Biomedical Equipment Specialist may include:



  • Perform preventive maintenance checks

  • Service all medical equipment

  • Troubleshoot malfunctioning or defective medically related equipment

  • Figure out power and space requirements for medical equipment installations

  • Install medical equipment

  • Prepare and submit medical equipment reports

Training


Job training for a Medical Equipment Repairer requires nine weeks of Basic Training, where you'll learn basic Soldiering skills, and 41 weeks of Advanced Individual Training, including practice in repairing and replacing equipment parts. Part of this time is spent in the classroom and part in the field. Some of the skills you learn are:



  • Principles of electronics

  • Use and maintenance of electrical and electronic test equipment

  • Equipment repair exercises

  • An interest in solving problems

  • Attention to detail

Advanced Responsibilities


Advanced level Medical Equipment Repairer provides guidance, supervises and trains other Soldiers within the same discipline. As an advanced level Medical Equipment Repairer, you may be involved in:



  • Establish and maintain procedures to ensure an effective preventive maintenance program

  • Perform quality control and acceptance inspections (does not include Center for Devices and Radiological Health-CDRH compliance testing or acceptance of Imaging Systems) on medical equipment and medically related equipment

  • Provide medical maintenance advice to units not authorized 68A3O/4O/5O personnel

  • Contribute to the development of medical maintenance Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)

  • Supervise, advise and assist in the training of subordinate personnel and may serve as Team Leader for maintenance operations
